A shallow reef and some fantastic rock formations will be the scenery for your SCUBA diving adventure.

As an official PADI Dive Center, Ocean Safari by Borderlands offers all the range of PADI courses, from Open Water Divers to professional Divemaster. Our Sports Center, right on Turtle Bay, just out of Weligama town, has an extensive range of SCUBA gear in excellent condition for all sizes (including children, who can enjoy breathing underwater from the age of 8).

So if you want to learn SCUBA diving or improve your skills, you’ve come to the right place.

If you don’t have time for a full course, or you’re just not sure you’ll like it, we also offer a Discover Scuba Diving program, or try dive (1 day, 1 swimming pool session, 1 dive in the sea), which will give you an idea about what to expect from a full course.

Certified divers will enjoy swimming amongst beautiful rock formations, whereas beginners will find the beach a nice place to relax after a long day of studying.

And if you are into wreck diving, we can take you all the way to Galle to dive two famous wrecks: the SS Rangoon and the SS Orestes.

Bubble Maker - 65 US$

Bubblemaker is as fun as it sounds – a chance for kids to blow bubbles by scuba diving. Children who are at least 8 years old can use scuba gear to breathe underwater and swim around in shallow water (in our swimming pool). Something they will remember all their life!

Kids must be comfortable in the water, but no prior experience is necessary. Parental approval is required.

 

Bubblemakers get a chance to:

  • Experience scuba diving under the direct care and supervision of a PADI Pro.
  • Take their first breaths underwater in water shallower than 2 meters/6 feet.
  • Learn about and use scuba diving equipment made for children.
  • Get an overview of breathing do’s and don’ts. 
  • Have lots of fun.

Your beloved ones will be taken in charge by our experienced staff. Sashi is a local PADI Divemaster and also a coxswain. Antonio is a French PADI Instructor (he also speaks English and Spanish). They both have international experience as PADI Dive pros and love to share their passion about scuba diving.

What is Included:-

  • Full Scuba Dive set (BCD, Regulator, Wet suits, dive masks, snorkels, fins, depth and pressure gauge, weights) sized for kids.
  • In the Bubblemaker program, participants get a basic introduction to how to use scuba gear, how to clear a regulator and mask.
  • After the experience, children get a Bubblemaker certificate and card.

Discover Scuba Diving - 135 US$

Have you always wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater? If you want to try scuba diving, but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge into a certification course (or if you just don’t have time to), Discover Scuba Diving is for you. While not a scuba certification course, Discover Scuba Diving is a quick and easy introduction to what it takes to explore the underwater world. To sign up for a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience, you must be at least 10 years old. No prior experience with scuba diving is necessary, but you need to be in reasonable physical health. Are you ready to try it out?

Content: You learn the basic safety guidelines and skills needed to dive under the direct supervision of a PADI Professional. You’ll make one or two open water dive(s), and will practice a few more skills in shallow water to prepare for your adventure. Get ready to:

  • Go over the scuba equipment you use to dive and how easy it is to move around underwater with your gear.
  • Find out what it’s like to breathe underwater.
  • Learn key skills.
  • Have fun swimming around and exploring.
  • Hear about becoming a certified diver through the PADI Open Water Diver course.

Location: Borderlands Adventure Centre
Time to Location: The shore dives are done right in front of the Borderlands Activity Centre.
Time/Duration: 

  • Brief and swimming pool session: 1 to 3 hours, according to your self-confidence.
  • 1 shore dives: 2 hours
    * This program is usually made of two half-days. First one in the swimming pool, second one in the sea.

Group: Min- 1 ~ Max- 8
Age:  10 and above

What is included:

  • Drinking water
  • A full set of scuba gear (mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device, dive gauges and a tank)

What is no included:

  • Meals and Beverages
  • Sunblock cream

Price: 135$ (swimming pool session is always included)

  • The course may be cancelled due to bad weather

PADI® Open Water Dive course - 450 US$

PADI® Open Water Diver course (or PADI Junior Open Water Diver course if you are under 15)

Get your scuba diving certification with the PADI® Open Water Diver course – the world’s most popular and widely recognized scuba course. To enroll in a PADI Open Water Diver course (or Junior Open Water Diver course), you must be 10 years old or older. You need adequate swimming skills and need to be in good physical health. ContentThe PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:

  • Knowledge Development (in our classroom and/or online) to understand basic principles of scuba diving
  • Confined Water Dives (in our swimming pool) to learn basic scuba skills
  • 4 Open Water Dives to use your skills and explore!

Time/Duration: 3 to 4 days according to the student skills and confidence (Schedule will be set up between the instructor and the students)

Age: 10 to 14 for the Junior Open Water certification / 15 and above for the Open Water certification

Notes:

  • A medical statement will be provided to be read and signed by the participants
  • A final exam (MCQ) will have to be passed.
  • A certification card will be issued if all the requirements have been met. This Open Water Dive certification allows to go fun diving all around the world at a maximum depth of 18m/60 feet (12m/40 feet for a Junior Open Water Diver)
  • Bookings should be made as soon as possible to ensure your place.
PADI® Advanced Open Water Dive course - 430$

Go deeper!
That’s what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about. You don’t have to be “advanced” to take it – it’s designed to advance your diving, so you can start right after earning your PADI Open Water Diver certification. The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives. You try out different specialties while gaining experience under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. You log dives and develop capabilities as you find new ways to have fun scuba diving.

Scuba Review / Refresh - 90US$

Haven’t been scuba diving lately? Feeling a bit rusty? The Scuba Review program is just the refresher you need to brush up on your knowledge and skills. A PADI Professional will get you in the water having fun and feeling comfortable again. Then you are ready to go diving again and maybe take your next PADI course!

Academics:
You’ll go over important dive safety concepts, dive planning essentials and problem management. Your PADI Professional will have you practice putting your gear together and doing a predive safety check with your buddy. In the water, you’ll review all the basic scuba skills with a focus on good buoyancy control.

Your host:

Expedition Galle - 280 US$

Wreck Dives at Galle (for Advanced Open Water certified divers only)
Come with one of our guides to explore the wrecks of Galle.

  • SS Orestes (the “Tango wreck”)

Other options might become available. There are around ten wrecks around Galle. Ask us to know more!

The wrecks

  • SS Rangoon
    A fantastic old British steamer built in 1863 lying upright on a beautiful sandy plain. Prolific fish life.  It sank just outside the Galle harbor after striking the outer Kada rock while here engines were shut down while loading local mail enroute to Australia. Quite a scenic wreck with shoals of snappers. Maximum depth: 30m
  • SS Orestes
    Also known as the “Tango Wreck”, this ship is certainly the SS Orestes that sunk in 1875 after striking the Gindura Reef. This site consists of about 20 large iron cannons, located between Gibbet and Closenburg Islands. The site extends from close to the shore in a roughly southerly direction down to a depth of about 24 m. Maximum depth: 24 meters.
